I have known Anthony since October 2019, when my daughter Emilia started to attend piano lessons. On our first meeting, at his very neat, tidy apartment, my attention brought endless number of amateur drawings, completed by his students and their younger siblings. Anthony would not hesitate to expose them all. He would also not hesitate to mark his living room walls by recording his students’ physical growth!
Our meetings were always a mixture of chatting, telling stories, joking and playing. After some time, we would know so much about each other’s lives. Not for once I was thinking to myself; how come with such a little playing the progress is so impressive! Anthony would frequently repeat: ‘I don’t teach them, they teach themselves’. He had this relaxed approach to teaching, in a magical way engaging his students with music he adored. He would call notes ‘blobs’, challenging piece of music ‘easy peasy’. He would frequently reassure his students by saying; I promise you, you can do it! He would inject them with an enormous level of confidence, which would then bring fantastic results.
There was no Birthday nor Christmas Anthony would not spoil his students with thoughtful presents.
Even Adam, Emilia’s brother would get one, despite of not being his student!
We were corresponding by emails, too. Occasionally, Anthony would send me a piece of music he beautifully performed for BBC in his youth.
I admired him for his talent, eloquence, sensitivity, but also for his kindness and sense of humour. This all has been already strongly missed.
Covid was an awful period for Anthony. His wellbeing was strongly affected. He was suffering from not being able to see his students nor his family.
Life has never been the same after.
On Tuesday, the 23rd of August we met for a lesson. Exceptionally, like never before, the whole crowd of us would appear. Anthony arranged it that way. Students were playing, one by one, beautifully. The level of emotions would bring him to tears.
On Thursday, the 25th of August Emilia submitted her piano grade six assessment on line. The results came a week later. Anthony was not with us anymore. He would be proud.
With love, Maria (Emilia's mum)
